Many years ago, during a horizon broadening trip to Newfoundland, I wandered off by myself to the area around Stephenville, on the south west coast. A little further on lay the tiny fishing community of Port au Port, where fishing and maritime paraphernalia lay about, waiting for the next season to arrive. This wonderful geometric design created by the stacked lobster traps fairly screamed out to be put on film, so I did. Hard workers’ tools, at the ready. Camera: Canon AE1. Despite the yellows and blues of the buildings in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, most of the buildings around the working harbour are weathered, if well kept. On a cliff high above this shingle beach in Gros Morne, I watched the incessant rise and fall of the waves. The swirling white waters formed an ethereal constant, as they refreshed the ancient beach. I was driving along on a road in North Saanich, Vancouver Island, when I came across this pastoral scene that is so typical of the rural areas on the Island. The fog and the animals in the field lent a relaxing, mellow feeling to the whole thing, so I took whatever I could. The final print is dramatically cropped top to bottom. Camera: Canon AE 1. Englishman River is a dramatic small river tumbling out of the mountains near Parksville, Vancouver Island At full spate, it can carry trees and boulders down with it. The mid-West Coast of Vancouver Island is characterized mostly by Pacific Rim National Park. The long sandy beaches call out to cold water surfers and beachcombers year-round. Strewn across these beaches are the remnants of fierce Pacific storms, throwing up their flotsam and grounding them on the beach. This bleached log, with its bared roots intact, is just such an item. Stretching out from Ogden Point in Victoria, BC, is the Ogden Point Breakwater. On one side, cruise ships and the pilot boats dock in calm waters, and on the other, lies a marine refuge and the Strait of Juan de Fuca with abundant sea life. Winter on Vancouver Island is an iffy affair if you want snow and ice; it’s usually just too warm. But in this particular year, we did get temperatures cold enough to glaze the waters of Beaver Lake in Victoria with a skim of ice.
